Trachoma is a potentially blinding eye infection, found worldwide. Eradicated in developed countries, it remains a major health problem in many parts of the world.
It is endemic in many areas of Kenya’s Rift Valley and Eastern provinces, and is closely linked to the high levels of poverty found throughout these areas and lack of access to water that allows people to wash their hands and faces regularly.
Sightsavers are tackling the disease by teaching people simple hygiene methods to prevent getting the disease as well as by providing antibiotics and minor surgery to treat it.
Lester Moitai teaches village women about the SAFE strategy, that helps to prevent trachoma at a homestead in Orinie in Kijiado, Kenya.
