Years of isolation and war in Afghanistan, has led the infant mortality rate to be the highest in the world, and the maternal mortality ratio is the second highest. The lifetime risk of maternal death is 1 in 6, which means one woman dies every 27 minutes.
Since 2004 however, over 2,000 midwives have been trained in newly established midwifery schools, that have been supported by the NGO Jphiego.
As part of a program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to increase the number of midwives providing health care across Afghanistan, community leaders are asked to help identify possible candidates and participate in selecting the student midwife. It’s an endorsement of a young woman’s potential and a commitment by the community to support her work and improved health care for residents.
