CARE International has been working in the former Yugoslavia since 1993 and is one of the largest non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the region. They have established a strong reputation for multi-ethnic programming that supports individuals and communities in need - regardless of ethnic backgrounds, religious affiliations or national origin.
Their work in Kosovo was suspended during Nato's bombing campaign in 1999 but during this time it ran several of the largest refugee camps in Macedonia and Albania. It now runs numerous multi ethnic projects throughout the region focusing on educational reform, women's advocacy, and strengthening community dialogue.

Tomo is 75 and is photographed here with his cow Belusha. He lives in the Serb enclave of Gorazhdevac where Care are hoping to develop a farm cooperative. "I have lived here all my life. I have 17 cows, 14 that give milk and three younger calves. I stayed here in Gorazhdevac during the war - 99 was my second war - I fought in the first war in Kosovo when the Italians and Germans were here. We get a lot of milk from the cows but the problem is that we have nowhere to sell it. If Care would set up a milk collective here it would mean we could sell our milk and have some form of income."

A young girl drinks water in the village of Dobraje , Kosova. The village has around 150 families but is very poor - in the whole village there are only three tractors to cultivate the land, no school or shop. Before the war there were problems with the drinking water but people were concerned with the war and other issues - people were getting sick but nobody really took notice. After the war though the water was tested and was found it to be badly contaminated. Villages therefore took wheelbarrows four kms down the road to collect their drinking water. In 2003 Care completed the water project and had water piped to the village source, from where people connected their houses to the mains - so each house now has an internal supply. Care has now handed over control to the municipality.
